In Japan certain convictions such as drug related immigration authorities take it extremely seriously.
You could even be banned from entering the country.
Japan is set to host the 2020 Olympic Games and is a popular holiday hotspot for British tourists.
But the country also has a similar enforcement and has one of the strictest requirements to enter the country.
If a UK citizen is travelling to Japan for a business, work or study, they will need to fill out an application for a visa.
But those who are just travelling there for a holiday for less than 90 days will not need to apply for a visa beforehand.
However, prior to landing they will be asked to fill out a landing card, which asks the following question: 'Have you ever been convicted of a crime in Japan or any other country?"
To be eligible to stay in the country the individual must NOT have any drug related criminal convictions.
No matter how long ago this conviction was or how minor, anyone who has been found guilty of possessing, supplying and using drugs such as narcotics, marijuana and stimulants will be sent home.
Included in this list is also anyone with a conviction for prostitution.
The Japanese Ministry of Justice also bars entry to those who have any criminal conviction where they have received a prison sentence of 12 months or more.
It does NOT matter whether the sentenced was served, how long ago it was or how minor the crime was, it is an immediate ban from entering the country.
The Japanese Embassy also makes clear that anyone granted a visa for entering the country other than a holiday does NOT mean they are guaranteed entry.
If those with a visa are found to be guilty of a crime, they can be refused entry by immigration at the border.
And it’s not just those who have a criminal conviction that could face a ban from entering Japan.
If Japan are hosting a major sporting event, such as the Olympic Games, anyone who is known for being violent at such events could be refused entry.
Those who may not have been convicted but have been arrested may be sent back home.
