If you own a device that runs on Windows 8.1, or a previous version, the app will stop working on Saturday.
In order to continue using the service you will need to update the operating system to Windows 10 Mobile, and then update to the latest version of Facebook Messenger.
Facebook notified users of the upcoming change on April 1 via an email.
‘Thank you for choosing to use Messenger,’ the social media website said.
‘We regret to inform you that since the end of March, the app version you’re using is no longer supported and you can no send and receive messages.
‘To continue to send and receive messages from Facebook on your phone, update your Facebook app to the latest version.’
Facebook Messenger follows WhatsApp and Skype in ending support for older versions of Windows Phone.
The operating system is quickly using popularity and currently has just 0.3% market share.
People using an iPhone or a recent version of Android will not be affected.
