Leon Smith To Give Andy Murray More Time To Consider Involvement In Davis Cup Next Month

Andy Murray

Leon Smith is ready to give Andy Murray more time to decide to play in the Davis Cup next month after announcing his initial four-man team today.

The world No 1 has been left out of the squad to face Canada on February 3 despite his early exit from the Australian Open.

Great Britain have called up Dan Evans, Kyle Edmund, Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot.

But Smith said: “We will continue to speak with Andy in the coming days regarding his potential involvement and if he decides he would like to be part of the team then we can of course change the nominations as necessary.

"There’s time. You can still change two out of the team up until Thursday morning.”

Speaking about Murray's Australian Open exit, Smith added: “It’s going to hurt.

“He could have played a bit better, could have served better throughout the match. We’re not used to seeing him broken eight times.

“It will be really tough to take. And I don’t think it’s because there was a lot of talk of Djokovic being out, and that was going to be his main rival. It’s not the case.

"There’s a lot of good players there. He will be reminded enough times by those round him of what a run he’s on. It’s one match. It’s a sore one just now, but he’ll come back.”
