The water stopped around 10.20am on yesterday for many across south west London.
Thames Water confirmed the problem was a result of a faulty pump.
But the problem left thousands unable to shower or cook Christmas dinner for a large part of the morning.
The TW2, TW3, TW4, TW12 and TW13 postcodes were all affected.
People took to Twitter in droves to vent their frustration.
One tweeted: "No water on Christmas Day, love living in London."
Another posted a gif of James Corden with his head in his hands, writing: "No water in South West London at all!"
Steve Trew, who lives in Isleworth, admitted he was glad that he was going out for Christmas dinner.
Speaking to ITV, the 55-year-old said: "A lot of people are going to be disappointed."
Iain Thompson, who lives in Twickenham, added: "Our family have travelled from the country to come stay with us and we can't have showers.
"I don't know how we're going to boil the potatoes for Christmas dinner."
Happy Christmas from @thameswater ! No water across a large swathe of SW London - Twickenham to Hampton at least! Anywhere else?

Thames Water said the problem – a faulty pump – is now fixed.
A spokeswoman said: "We are really sorry to all the customers who have had no water or low pressure today.
"It was due to an issue with a pump in our network.
"Our team as fixed the problem and pressure will be building in the area.
"We apologise for the disruption caused – it is never convenient to lose supply on Christmas Day."
