Useful Tips From Martin Lewis On How To Save Money On Energy Bills

Martin Lewis

Martin Lewis means all the best tips when it comes to saving you cash.

But when the Money Saving Expert dished out his latest advice on his ITV show about how to snap up the cheapest gas and electricity it nearly broke the internet.

Thousands of viewers almost immediately jumped on to utility firms websites and price comparison sites to check their existing deals and see if a better one was availible.

Speaking on Tuesday night’s show, he claims UK consumers could save between £200-400million cumulatively simply by switching their energy provider.

And it seems people couldn’t get enough of Martin’s tips tonight on ITV’s Martin Lewis Money Show LIVE.

In fact, his deals caused such a rush of consumers trying to switch many energy firms’ websites and comparison sites crashed when it aired on Tuesday night.

Here are Martin’s top tips on how to get the best utility deal:

1) Switch, switch, switch!

As we move into winter, now is the perfect time to think about switching your energy provider.

The cheapest deals are for switchers, vastly undercutting the rest.

2) Use a comparison site

Forget the phonecall, the best way to find out the cheapest deals is on a price comparison site

Just type in your details and all the different tariffs will appear - making the task much easier for you.

3) Get on the phone

If you don’t want to use a comparison site, call up your provider and ask them - ‘am I on your cheapest deal? If not put me on it.’

4) You can save if you’re prepayment cards and meters

People on prepayment metres tend to get a worse deal when it comes to gas and electricity.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t switch or save money too.

Call handlers may try to put you off but stand your ground and insist you want to switch.

If possible, switch to a billed meter. You may have to pay, but the savings are usually worth it.

5) Don’t just stick to the Big Six

Smaller providers often offer bigger savings. The comparison sites will help you find new providers - but make sure you check their customer service rating too.
