Tony Ferguson beats Rafael dos Anjos to claiming a stake for UFC lightweight title shot.
This time next week the Irishman will hope to have the lightweight belt around his waist after taking on champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.
But if he does, Tony Ferguson will be coming for it.
The Californian produced a stunning performance to beat former champion Rafael dos Anjos in Mexico on Saturday night.
In doing so he took his winning streak to nine - a new record in the 155lb division.
Ferguson was judged the winner by scores of 48-47 on all three scorecards after the five-round war.
Ferguson had moved his training camp to Big Bear in preparation for the biggest fight of his career.
But the No.3-ranked lightweight lost the first round as Dos Anjos targeted his legs.
That changed in round two however as Ferguson dazzled the Brazilian with his arsenal of strikes.
Dos Anjos' face was beginning to mark up badly and a cut opened up around his right eye.
Still he fought back however only to see Ferguson absorb the best shots he could throw.
The winner ended the fight having landed 199 significant strikes.
Ferguson was non-committal about his future plans, saying simply: "I'm not going to tell you what's next."
Dos Anjos said: "Tony was a better fighter tonight. I felt like his fingers in my eye bothered me in the second. But that’s not an excuse. Tony did a great job. He was a better fighter today."
