Eva Carneiro Receives Death Threats After She Clashed With Jose Mourinho

Eva Carneiro

Former Chelsea Football Club doctor Eva Carneiro has told how she received death threats from trolls in the wake of her infamous bust-up with Jose Mourinho.

The 43-year-old was publicly scorned by the then Chelsea manager over her intervention in a match on the opening day of the 2015 Premier League season.

Dr Carneiro departed from Stamford Bridge soon after the incident, but continued to receive sinister abuse online from "faceless cowards".

"Even though I don't have a presence on social media ... some of the threats of sexual violence and death threats make it through," she told the Daily Telegraph.

"They (the abusers) just seem to be faceless cowards and they should be answerable to legislation."

The medic, who now works at her own clinic on Harley Street in London, said she believes the issue of sexism in football is going unchecked.

"I think sexism is the least challenged form of discrimination. Anti-Semitic and other racist comments are widely condemned and I don't think that is the case (with sexism) and it begs the question what that leaves room for behind the scenes.

"It is widely accepted that football has a discrimination problem. I really do feel that way, but I think it is the least challenged form of discrimination."

Dr Carneiro described how she first faced discrimination in the early stages of her career.

The medic said she was left "stunned" at university when it was suggested by male acquaintances that her gender may limit her progression if she chose to follow a path into football.

Dr Carneiro was chastised by Mourinho after going on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard against Swansea City at Stamford Bridge in August 2015.

After leaving a month later she launched legal action against Chelsea and Mourinho at a tribunal, accusing her former boss of victimisation and discrimination.

In July she settled with the club and its former manager out of court and Chelsea apologised "unreservedly" for the distress caused.
