A Petition Has Been Lunched To Get Bank Of England New £5 For Vegans

£5

A petition has been launched against a new £5 notes has hit gained more than 1,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

It was launched after the Bank of England confirmed in a tweet that the new note contained tallow – a substance made from animal fat, meaning the cash is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

The change.org petition was started by Doug Maw who wrote:

"The new £5 notes contain animal fat in the form of tallow. This is unacceptable to millions of vegans & vegetarians in the U.K. We demand that you cease to use animal products in the production of currency that we have to use."

The bank hasn’t said how (or if) it will be responding to the petition yet, but they said in a statement: ‘We can confirm that the polymer pellet from which the base substrate is made contains a trace of a substance known as tallow.

‘Tallow is derived from animal fats (suet) and is a substance that is also widely used in the manufacture of candles and soap.’

It’s safe to say vegans and vegetarians are outraged.
