Volkswagen Caravelle is the latest invention from the German manufacturer Volkswagen. Lets find out why you should consider yourself buying for it.
1. It's large. The Caravelle is based on the Transporter van – which is also the basis of the California camper van – so there's a lot of space.
2. No, it's really large. Yes, there are still only seven seats, just like the numerous other MPVs on the market, but there's so much more space in the van-sized space.
3. Flexibility. The five seats in the rear offer a great deal of flexibility to families.
In addition to a rear bench that offers space for three people, there are two second-row seats that swivel 360 degrees, between which there's a table that also which swivels, and folds and adjusts for height.
4. Plenty of bootspace, too. The rear bench seat can move forward and backwards on rails, to adjust the available space in the boot.
Even when travelling seven-up, you can get everyone's luggage in (as long as they're not packing the kitchen sink).
5. The latest technology. The latest Caravelle has all the mod cons fitted, including DAB digital radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth phone connectivity and USB connections.
The safety equipment fitted as standard includes an Automatic Post-Collision Braking system, which automatically applies brakes after a crash and can reduce the risk or severity of any secondary impact.
6. Surprisingly economical. The Caravelle is based on a van, so it's weight and brick-like aerodynamics don't exactly work in its favour, but with official fuel consumption of the 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine (in 148bhp and 201bbhp guises) ranging from 34.0mpg to 47.1mpg – depending on which engine, wheelbase and trim version you opt for – trips to the filling station might be rarer than you think.
And if you use the Caravelle for the longer trips it's best at coping with, it could work out to be pretty efficient.
7. All this and four-wheel drive, too. There are Caravelle variants fitted with Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, so if you live in a part of the country susceptible to snow, ice and lots of rain, and want a little extra peace of mind, this is the one you might want to go for (alternatively, a set of winter tyres will do the job, too).
