WhatsApp to introduce Snapchat-style drawing and camera features

Whatsapp

WhatsApp to introduce Snapchat-style drawing and camera features for its popular messaging app.

The messaging app, which is owned by parent company Facebook, has released a new version for Android users that has borrowed some of Snapchat's camera tools.

Now WhatsApp users can add text, emojis and doodle over the top of photos and videos with multiple colours and fonts.

This style of photo messaging was popularised by app Snapchat, which also is known for its different filters to change both the appearance and sound of people being recorded.

WhatsApp has also launched front-facing flash, another feature on Snapchat, meaning those using the messaging app can take better photos in the dark.

About 150 million people across the globe use Snapchat every day, with 60 million of them in the U.S. and Canada, while WhatsApp has more than 1 billion monthly users scattered all over the world.

Many of the places where WhatsApp dominates are not strong areas for Snapchat use.

In an online blog post posted on Monday, the company said: "Today we're introducing new ways to customize and enhance the photos and videos you share with friends and family around the world.

"With WhatsApp's new camera features, you can now write or draw on photos and videos, as well as add emoji to express yourself."

The company said the new camera features were available on Android phones from yesterday and on iPhone "soon".
