Is Mark Carney Leaving?

Mark Carney

According to sources within the City of London claim the Canadian economist is preparing to announce his intention to step down - possibly going public as early as Thursday.

Dr Carney has been sharply criticised for making an unprecedented intervention in politics in the lead-up to this summer's Brexit vote, in an attempt to warn people about the impacts of a Brexit victory.

The supposedly neutral governor predicted: "We would expect material slowing in growth, a notable rise in inflation, a challenging trade-off.

"There's a range of possible scenarios around those directions, which could possibly include a technical recession."

The Bank of Engand itself did not make an official forecast about the impact of Brexit, but did release a note warning that leaving the EU could plunge the UK into recession, which has not happened.

Dr Carney has since taken a more upbeat tone, saying that "most countries" want to trade with Britain and Brexit presents a "very large" opportunity.

However, his ill-advised intervention has had a disastrous effect on his reputation and sources now believe he will return to Canada after stepping down from his current role.

This will most likely not happen until 2018, however, due to the Bank of England's tangled bureaucracy.
