Whatsapp refuses to delete users data

Whatsapp has refused to comply with several court orders to stop sharing its users data with its parent company Facebook.

The firm has confirmed it will not comply with an order issued last week by an Indian court, which told WhatsApp to delete information it had gathered on its customers.

Speaking to Mashable India, WhatsApp said that the Delhi High Court order will have "no impact on the planned policy and terms of service updates."

Last week's ruling was meant to protect the privacy of WhatsApp users in India who had opted out of the app's new privacy policy changes by last week.

However WhatsApp says that it is still sharing information with Facebook as originally planned, meaning that the estimated 100 million users in the country could still be caught out.

The company had initially said that "there is no question of messages, photographs or documents getting shared with Facebook. We have no access to the content."

"Using the messaging service is a voluntary decision, we have not forced anybody to use it. Users have an option of opting out of it."

The Indian ruling was the first to hit Facebook-owned WhatsApp, and was quickly followed by a similar decision in Germany earlier this week.

This second ruling also told Facebook to delete all data that has already been transferred from WhatsApp in a damaging blow for the company.

It said that the practice of sharing WhatsApp user data with Facebook was "an infringement of national data protection law."

If you would like to opt-out and stop WhatsApp sharing your data with Facebook you should uncheck the small box above the Agree button when asked to accept the revised terms.

WhatsApp's changes caused outrage from users around the world, who were made to agree to new terms and conditions to use the app.

Many were angry that WhatsApp broke a promise it made to users when it was bought by Facebook back in 2014, having previously claimed it would never share user data with the social network.

Under the new changes, Facebook is able to see the phone number that people have associated with their WhatsApp account.

That allows the US social network to link and track profiles between the two services, helping Facebook gather more data for its advertisements.
