This dog smells more than of bombs and drugs

Sniffer dogs

Sniffer dogs are typically trained specially in detecting substances like explosives, illegal drugs, money or blood.

But this police dog has a rather unusual skill.

Billie is believed to be the only dog in the UK trained to sniff out semen at crime scenes.

The specialised dog is a member of Derbyshire Police and has already completed 18 searches since he was first deployed in March.

In one particular case, a man was arrested after semen found by Billie was forensically analysed and proved to be a DNA match.

The three-year-old dog is able to detect stains on a range of surfaces and has uncovered marks more than a year old, according to the police.

Supt Dick Hargreaves called Billie an 'asset' and said: 'He's already been used in numerous investigations and has found evidence that has resulted in crime scene investigators identifying DNA profiles.'

Mr Hargreaves added that the cocker spaniel underwent 'intensive training' so that he could help police investigate sex offences.

A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman said Billie was the only dog in the UK 'specifically trained' in detecting semen.
