Discover the real seasons why planes are painted with whites

Air planes are a miracle of the 21st century. This form of transportation makes our journey smoother and more convenient from UK to Australia, UK to across the Atlantic or even from UK to Asia/Africa.

It's probably something you've never thought about, but there's actually a reason why planes are painted white. Well, there are multiples reasons actually.

From British Airways to RyanAir, you'll now notice that planes are nearly always painted white and this is mainly for safety reasons.

The white colour makes it easy to identify things like oil spills, cracks and any other malfunctions that may prevent you getting from airport A to airport B safely.

It also makes it easy to spot planes in the sky, so if there is a crash it will be easily seen.

On top of this, if you paint a plane in a colour other than white it will absorb sunlight and heat up, which is something you really want to avoid.

If you were ever fortunate enough to own your own private plane, don't go painting it a bright colour because you'll have difficulty selling it.

Maintaining planes is expensive so if an airline bought your aircraft they'd probably have to paint it white, which adds another cost to their budget.

Another thing you've probably never questioned is – why do you have to switch to flight mode on a plane and what happens if you don't?

Many airline passengers believe that their mobiles can interfere with a plane's electrical equipment and cause the plane to crash.

In reality however, there is no evidence to suggest this. While it can cause the occasional disruption, leaving your mobile phone on won't really do much damage.

However, it will really annoy your pilot, so we don't suggest you rebel against the rule. This is because, if you fail to switch to flight mode it can cause an unpleasant sound for air traffic controllers.
