A woman earned her graduation more than 80 years later.
In the 1930s, the Great Depression prevented Clare Picciuto from graduating from high school.
Her parents had asked her to quit her education and start working to bring money into the household. And so she did.
‘Her brothers were allowed to continue with their education,’ Clare’s daughter, Deborah, told ABC News. ‘She always bemoaned the fact that she wasn’t able to.
‘But she never lost her love of learning.’
On her 100th birthday this Wednesday, Clare attended a bingo day at Edith A. O’Leary Senior Center in Massachusetts. There, Deborah had arranged for the North Reading Public Schools’ superintendent to surprise her mum with an honorary high school diploma – complete with a cap and gown.
Superintendent Jon Bernard said: ‘I told her that in my opinion, her life experiences alone had earned her the honor tassel and diploma.’
‘Clare was so articulate, sharp and positive. She is truly representative of all the things we should aspire to be.’
