These are the areas in Britain offering the biggest house price discounts

SAVVY home buyers can haggle discounts worth tens of thousands off around one in three properties on sale, according to figures.

Vendors who reduced prices at the beginning of August knocked off an average £25,257, property website Zoopla found.

Sellers in the north of England are most likely to offer discounts, with almost half of homes in Huddersfield, Wigan and St Helens cutting prices.

But bargain-hunters may be best off heading to London, where sellers are wiling to give some of the biggest value reductions.

Homes for sale in Kensington and Chelsea had an average £156,996 sliced off prices- or almost 10 per cent - while Westminster buyers could expect around £137,999 to be knocked off.

Bishop Auckland, Haverfordwest and Durham in the North were found to offer the biggest cuts in terms of percentage, each offering around 10 per cent off prices.

The areas of Britain seeing the fewest reductions were Salford, Edinburgh and Slough with around 15 per cent, 17 per cent and 22 per cent of the market respectively giving discounts.

The smallest cut in asking prices were seen in Worcester, Milton Keynes and Aylesbury where sellers shaved less than five per cent off prices.

Spokesman for Zoopla, Lawrence Hall said: "The total number of properties on the market with a reduction has risen since April, but discounts are way off their peak and not as high as one might have predicted given the EU Referendum outcome.

"However, where there are bargains to be had, this could present a good opportunity for those first time buyers lucky enough to have saved the required deposit".

"Couple this with the recent interest rate cut decision which could result further in adjustments in mortgage rates, the second half of this year could a great opportunity for first time buyers to research the market and find a bargain."
