Drinking one or two cups of coffee per day could save the life of heart-attack patients, recent research reveals.
A new study shows that those who previously suffered a heart attack and drink one to two cups of the hot beverage each day are 20 per cent less likely to die prematurely from heart damage than those who never touch coffee.
Patients who sup more than two cups per day are nearly half as likely to die early.
As part of their research, a team from York University tracked 3,271 victims across the UK, including 604 who survived but later died as a result of their condition.
The patients had all taken part in research which chronicled their coffee-drinking habits as part of a wider lifestyle study.
Scientists said it is still not entirely clear how coffee boosted the heart but noted there are a whole host of potentially beneficial ingredients in coffee beans as well as caffeine.
Last year, experts at the renowned Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, US, found three to five cups a day reduced the risk of dying from heart disease, as well as incurable conditions like Parkinson’s.
Coffee has also been proven to protect against liver cancer.
