In the nearer future SMARTPHONES charge will last longer. But find out how

Smartphone Charge

No matter what smartphone you use – iPhone, Nexus, Samsung – battery life is a problem and which is totally frustrating.

The majority of top-of-the-range smartphones ship with either 24 or 48 hours battery life. But that could be about to change.

Researchers have unearthed a way to dramatically extend the battery life of your next smartphone or tablet.

A team at the Institute for Soft Matter and Functional Materials in Grenoble, France have uncovered a new battery design that could extend the lifespan of your device for days.

The researchers have been replacing the graphite element used in traditional batteries with other materials in an effort to expand the capacity of the battery.

Silicon has been found to store around six times as many ions as graphite.

And better still, silicon is just as affordable and readily available as graphite.

Unfortunately, early tests resulted in a number of issues after the silicon-based batteries began to swell and expand as they took on charge.

You don't have to be a scientist to work out why that might not be an ideal design trait for the battery in the next iPhone.

However the Grenoble-based institute has claimed to have counteracted these issues.

Don't celebrate too soon – after all, these week-long batteries are unlikely to make an appearance in the upcoming iPhone 7.

But this is nonetheless a big step towards better battery technology, and could become the mainstream within the next couple of years.
