Discover Burma with COX & KINGS

Discover Burma with COX & KINGS

COX & KINGS has launched a new luxury cruise programme to lesser-visited regions of Burma for the year 2017.

The escorted tours company, which has also expanded its range of solo travellers' holidays in the Far East, has an itinerary that showcases an entirely different area of Burma - or Myanmar - than the well-established river cruise routes along the Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers.

Travellers who want to see the southern side of the country can now cruise around the Mergui archipelago on Pandaw's MY Andaman explorer.

The itinerary takes in remote islands and visits the territory of the Mokken minority ethnic group in a 14-day tour and cruise.

The Mokken are nomadic fishermen known as sea gypsies who swim underwater to catch fish using nets and spears and often live in hand-made wooden boats in the Andaman Sea and around the Mergui Archipelago.

The Cox & Kings cruise begins with a night in Bangkok and another in Ranong, in Thailand, before crossing the border to Burma to join the ship in Kawthaung for a 10-night cruise.

First stop is the Aladdin Islands at the southern end of the Mergui archipelago, followed by the Sullivan Islands where the Mokken people live on Lambi Island.

There are two days cruising through the Sular Islands, also known as the Great West Torres, then on to Port Maria near Thayawathadangyi.

Other stops include the once important trading centre of Myeik; Tavoy Island; Moulmein and Hpa An - the capital of Karen state.

The cruise finishes by sailing through the Gulf of Martaban into the Rangoon River to Rangoon city for an afternoon tour and overnight at a hotel before flying home.

"The interest from clients in cruising has risen over the past few years and it is easy to see why," says Neill Prothero, Far East product manager at Cox & Kings."

"The way of travel allows for a luxurious experience, taking travellers to areas that are otherwise difficult to reach, or which don't have the same level of infrastructure on land."
