7am vs 7pm | What're the differences

7am-7pm
The people we see on a daily basis tend to have gently constructed their appearance. We see them dressed in the outfit they view as acceptable for the outside world. We see their hair smoothed down and their face washed or made up. Even if you think of yourself as low-maintenance, you’ve probably put in a little bit of work to prepare yourself for leaving the house. And so we rarely see people in their truly natural state, bleary-eyed, still in their comfiest clothes, and just a bit messier than usual. That’s what makes Barbara Iweins’ photo series, 7AM/7PM, so interesting to stare at.

7AM/7PM is part of Barbara’s multi-year Au Coin de ma Rue project, which started when Barbara realised she wanted to learn more about the strangers she had photographed in the street. Au Coin de ma Rue sees Barbara taking yearly portraits of people who were once strangers, in different set-ups and with different props. 7AM/7PM took place in the fourth year of the project. Barbara took one photo of each of her subjects at 7am, when they had just woken up, and at 7pm, after they had gone about their day.
